As we honor the triumphs and struggles of Black Americans during Black History Month, these reprehensible threats are a painful reminder of the ongoing racism and hatred that our Black communities have experienced for generations and continue to experience today. Southwestern University strongly condemns the recent bomb threats at HBCUs across the country. Southwestern also released their own response on Thursday, Feb. The Associated Colleges of the South is a higher education consortium whose membership includes 16 residential liberal arts colleges - Birmingham-Southern College (AL), Centenary College (LA), Centre College (KY), Davidson College (NC), Furman University (SC), Hendrix College (AR), Millsaps College (MS), Morehouse College (GA), Rhodes College (TN), University of Richmond (VA), Rollins College (FL), Sewanee: The University of the South (TN), Southwestern University (TX), Spelman College (GA), Trinity University (TX), Washington and Lee University (VA). Notable alumnae include lawyer and civil-rights activist Marian Wright Edelman, musician and historian Bernice Johnson. Spelman and five other African American institutions in Atlanta sharing students, faculty, facilities, and curricula. Jon Kopaloff Spelman is a historically Black liberal arts college for women that has several notable alumnae including Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker and 'The Cosby Show' star Keshia. We especially extend our concern, appreciation, and support to our HBCU colleagues and friends during these difficult times.
